Rail Freight 08 Community Summit

About the Summit
Shaping Victoria’s Future in Freight

Rail Freight 08 Community Summit brought together citizens and industry experts to deconstruct and discuss a complicated transport issue that needs to be resolved.

Industry and academic experts predict impacts on our society when Asciano terminates its regional rail service in 2009 and we face a future without a country rail freight service. This message was only strengthened by the numbers that gathered at the Summit and also by the continual reference of speakers to the critical need for a rail revamp.

The Hon. Tim Fischer AC, who led the Rail Freight Network Review in 2007, spoke at the forum, as did Minister for Transport Lynne Kosky. The Summit provided a platform for the discussion of complex issues of rail freight including those of infrastructure, environment, economy, safety and community.

After numerous experts gave their views, summit attendees were invited to provide input, thoughts and ideas on how Victoria should respond.

Concluding documents from Rail Freight 08 are to be to the Minister for Transport as a community contribution to finding the pathway forward. A response from the Premier has also been floored.
